United Airlines Flight From Chicago to Twin Cities Diverts to Wisconsin Over Unruly Passenger

A United Airlines flight traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Wisconsin on Friday evening following what the airline described as a security-related incident involving a disruptive passenger.

The aircraft was safely diverted to Madison, where authorities were able to address the situation before the flight continued toward its original destination.

Flight Rerouted During Trip to Minneapolis

The flight, operated by a Boeing 737, departed from Chicago O’Hare International Airport at approximately 8:02 p.m. CDT on Friday.

According to flight tracking data from FlightAware, the aircraft altered its route and landed at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, at approximately 9:29 p.m. CDT.

The diversion occurred after concerns arose regarding passenger behavior onboard the aircraft.

Airline Cites Security Concern

In a statement released after the incident, United Airlines confirmed that the flight was diverted because of a security issue involving an unruly passenger.

The airline emphasized that the aircraft landed safely and that the situation was handled without injuries.

United reported that all 147 passengers and six crew members onboard were unharmed during the incident.

Law Enforcement Reportedly Assisted During the Flight

Air traffic control communications obtained from LiveATC.net provided additional insight into the situation.

According to the audio, one of the pilots informed controllers that it was their understanding that law enforcement officers who were onboard the aircraft had subdued the individual involved before the plane landed.

No additional details regarding the passenger or the nature of the disturbance were immediately released.

Flight Continued After Madison Stop

Following the diversion and handling of the incident, the aircraft was scheduled to resume its journey to Minnesota.

FlightAware data indicated that the plane was expected to depart Madison at approximately 11:25 p.m. CDT and arrive at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport shortly after midnight, with a projected landing time of 12:59 a.m. CDT on Saturday.

Passenger Safety Remained Top Priority

Airlines regularly divert flights when onboard incidents pose potential safety or security concerns. While diversions can cause delays and operational disruptions, they allow crews and authorities to address situations safely and minimize risks to passengers and staff.

In this case, United Airlines confirmed that the aircraft landed safely, no injuries were reported, and the flight was able to continue after authorities addressed the incident in Madison.
