American Airlines is scaling back parts of its summer schedule by temporarily suspending several domestic routes amid rising operational expenses linked to escalating jet fuel prices.
The carrier confirmed that a number of flights scheduled for August and September will be removed from its timetable as it seeks to offset higher fuel costs. Industry-wide fuel prices have climbed sharply since the conflict involving Iran began, placing additional financial pressure on airlines across the United States.
Fuel Price Spike Drives Schedule Changes
According to American Airlines, jet fuel prices in the U.S. have increased by approximately 56% since the outbreak of the conflict. The sharp rise in fuel expenses has forced airlines to reevaluate route profitability and adjust schedules where necessary.
To manage these increased costs, American has chosen to temporarily suspend several domestic services during the late summer travel season.
The airline emphasized that the changes are intended as a cost-management measure rather than a permanent reduction in service.
Routes Impacted by the Temporary Suspensions
The following routes will be removed from American Airlines’ schedule during portions of August and September:
- Los Angeles (LAX) to Cleveland (CLE)
- Los Angeles (LAX) to Columbus (CMH)
- Los Angeles (LAX) to Pittsburgh (PIT)
- Los Angeles (LAX) to Washington Dulles (IAD)
- Charlotte (CLT) to Ontario (ONT)
- Charlotte (CLT) to Sacramento (SMF)
These cancellations affect both transcontinental and domestic hub-to-city connections that American had previously expanded or restored.
Passengers Will Receive Alternative Travel Options
American Airlines stated that customers impacted by the route suspensions will not be left without assistance.
Travelers whose flights are canceled will be offered:
- Rebooking on alternative American Airlines flights
- Alternative routing options where available
- Refunds for eligible canceled itineraries
The carrier said it is working to minimize disruption and provide flexible solutions for affected passengers.
Other Airlines Continue Service on Select Routes
Although American is suspending these services, travelers will still have access to nonstop flights on some of the affected routes through competing airlines.
Los Angeles–Pittsburgh Service Remains Available
Both Breeze Airways and United Airlines will continue operating nonstop flights between Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.
Cleveland and Washington Dulles Connections Continue
United Airlines also maintains nonstop service on:
- Los Angeles to Cleveland
- Los Angeles to Washington Dulles
This ensures passengers still have direct travel options despite American’s temporary withdrawal from those markets.
Competition Increased on the Columbus Route
The Los Angeles–Columbus route attracted significant attention when American Airlines launched daily nonstop service in 2024.
The route connected Los Angeles directly with Ohio’s largest city and was viewed as an important expansion of the airline’s domestic network.
However, competition has intensified since then.
Multiple Carriers Now Serve the Market
In addition to American Airlines, travelers can currently choose nonstop service between Los Angeles and Columbus through:
- United Airlines
- Frontier Airlines
- Southwest Airlines
The growing number of competing carriers may have contributed to increased pressure on route profitability as operating costs continue to rise.
Charlotte Loses Two Nonstop Connections
The schedule adjustment will have a greater impact on Charlotte travelers.
American’s decision temporarily eliminates all nonstop flights between:
- Charlotte and Ontario, California
- Charlotte and Sacramento, California
With these suspensions, passengers traveling between these city pairs will likely need to connect through other hubs until service resumes.
Airlines Face Ongoing Cost Challenges
Fuel remains one of the largest operating expenses for airlines, and sudden price increases can significantly affect route planning and profitability.
As geopolitical tensions continue to influence global energy markets, airlines may be forced to make additional adjustments to schedules, fleet deployment, and network strategies.
For now, American Airlines says the route suspensions are temporary and aimed at navigating a period of unusually high fuel costs while maintaining overall network stability.
